If you learn well from structured video instruction and have the self-discipline to work through a curriculum independently, PPI gives you a lot to work with.

For engineers who are recently graduated and still close to the material, that works. Like PPI, School of PE is built on the academic model. The instruction is delivered by people who know their subjects well. The assumption is that you arrive with a working foundation and the course fills in and sharpens from there. For engineers who fit that profile, it’s a structured and thorough program.

What it doesn’t provide is a personalized plan, ongoing coaching, or the kind of ground-up content approach that meets students where they actually are. Whether that matters depends entirely on what you need.

Best for: Engineers who want live instruction from discipline-specific experts and are prepared to drive their own consistency through a premium course.

PrepFE (prepfe.com) — A Solid, Affordable Practice Platform

PrepFE is a practice problem platform. It’s honest about what it is and doesn’t try to be more than that. No video lectures, no study guides, no coaching. Problems, flashcards, and performance analytics.

What you get: practice problems organized by topic, timed full-length practice exams, digital flashcards, and data on where you’re performing well and where you’re not. Browser-based and iOS. Covers five of the seven FE disciplines.

Cost: Around $110 for 6 months. Pass guarantee in the form of a free subscription renewal if you don’t pass.

PrepFE is well-built for what it is. The analytics are useful, the problems are solid, and the price makes it easy to add to whatever else you’re doing. A lot of engineers use it alongside another program. That’s probably the right way to use it — as a supplement that sharpens your timing and surfaces weak areas, not as a standalone solution. If you’re weak in a subject, PrepFE will show you clearly. Teaching you the concept is on you to solve elsewhere.

Best for: Engineers who already have a strong foundation and need practice reps and performance data. Most effective when paired with any of the best FE Exam prep courses we’ve covered.

Self Study — The Lowest Cost, The Highest Execution Demand

Self study means building your own program from scratch. The NCEES FE Reference Handbook is free. PPI textbooks run $100–$200. YouTube covers a lot of ground at no cost. Put it together deliberately and you have a legitimate preparation program for close to nothing.

Cost: Near zero to around $300 depending on what you buy.

Self study works for some engineers. Recently graduated, strong momentum, clear self-discipline, limited budget — for that person, it can be enough.
