FE Exam Calculator Policy — What NCEES Allows

As of 2026, three calculator families are approved:
Texas Instruments: All TI-30X and TI-36X models. The model name must contain “TI-30X” or “TI-36X.”
Casio: All fx-115 and fx-991 models. The model name must contain “fx-115” or “fx-991.”
Hewlett Packard: The HP 33s and HP 35s only.
That’s it.
The rule is based on the model name — not the specific variant.
So the Casio fx-115ES Plus 2nd Edition is approved because it contains “fx-115” in the name. The TI-30XS MultiView is approved because it contains “TI-30X.”
When in doubt, check the name printed on the physical calculator against the NCEES umbrella rule.
What’s not approved: Graphing calculators (TI-84, TI-89, TI-Nspire), CAS-enabled calculators, programmable calculators, phone apps, tablet apps, smartwatches.
If it can store text, graph, or connect to the internet — it’s out.

The TI-36X Pro is the best calculator for FE exam for most engineers — recommended by roughly 80% of FE prep sources, engineering forums, and university programs.
It’s not the most feature-rich calculator on the approved list, the Casio fx-991CW actually has more functions. But what makes the TI-36X Pro the best calculator for FE exam is the combination of capability, usability, and ecosystem support.
The four-line MultiView display. On a 5-hour exam with roughly 3 minutes per question, you’re constantly referencing previous calculations.

Casio fx-115ES Plus (~$17) — Best budget pick. Does everything the TI-36X Pro does at about 60% of the price. Matrix operations, equation solver, numeric integration and differentiation, complex number support.
The Natural Textbook Display shows equations the way they appear in the FE Reference Handbook — reducing transcription errors.
The standout feature: solar + battery dual power. Your calculator will not die during the exam, even if the battery is completely dead and ambient light keeps it running. On a 5-hour exam where swapping batteries isn’t an option, that’s genuine peace of mind.
If budget is a concern, this is the right call.
Casio fx-991CW (~$21) — Most capable approved calculator. The newest model on the approved list — 540+ functions, 4×4 matrix capability, high-resolution display. Objectively the most powerful approved option.
If you want maximum features and are comfortable learning a menu-driven interface, this is the ceiling of what NCEES allows. Solar powered as well.
TI-30X series — On the list, but not ideal. The TI-30X models are approved and familiar to engineers who used them in school.
The problem is they’re missing the matrix solver, polynomial root finder, and several advanced functions you’ll want on the FE exam. Adequate for basic arithmetic and trig — not the best tool for a 110-question engineering exam.
If you already own one and are comfortable with it, it can work. If you’re buying new, get the TI-36X Pro instead.
HP 33s and HP 35s — Approved but discontinued. Both HP models remain on the NCEES approved list, but both are out of production — the HP 35s is available refurbished, the HP 33s is very hard to find.
Both use RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) input, which is different from the standard algebraic entry of TI and Casio calculators and has a real learning curve.
If you already own one and are fluent with RPN, use it. If you’re starting fresh, there’s no practical reason to seek these out over the TI-36X Pro or a Casio.
Calculators That Will Get Turned Away

The proctor will inspect your calculator before you sit down. If it’s not on the approved list, you take the exam without one — or you don’t take it at all and forfeit your fee.
