Passing the FE Exam shouldn’t be a mystery.
Sadly though, what it takes to successfully prepare for the FE Exam remains a guessing game for many.
So how can Prepineer help in it all?
This is a question we get often from people who are tired of spending their money and spinning their wheels.
Good news is, we are here to help.
Let’s get in to it.
Lets start with this…
Prepineer was developed out of necessity – not just to be “another” program –
By design, we do things differently.
When I first started thinking about preparing for the FE, I honestly thought it would be a simple formula.
Something I had done a thousand times before.
You know…
Open a book, read some text, do some practice problems, take the exam, pass the exam, ask my employer for a raise, receive the raise, and live happily ever after.
Welp, little did I know.
Having already been out of college and deep into the corporate world, most all that I had learned in years past was gone from memory.
We just don’t use these fundamentals of engineering in the field.
So to put it simply, there were some solid doubts right from the start on whether or not I could even get it done.
Add on to all of this a (more than) full time job, growing family and a social life –
And studying was not really at the top of my list of things I wanted to be doing.
But I knew I needed to get it done, one way or another.
And I will leave it at that.
The FE Exam is personal…
For one reason or another, you are reading this because you know that passing the FE Exam will benefit you.
That reason is very personal to you –
I encourage you to hold it tight, it will be the strength that propels you for much of this journey.
Today, as I reflect back on it all, what Prepineer has become over the last decade was seeded when I was preparing myself.
But the framework has been in continuous development to focus in on those things that at the end of the day…
Really matter.
Whether you are just now graduating, have been out of school for years, have already failed the exam, the components of a successful run tend to look the same across the board.
So let’s take a walk through the components, framing each in the context of what most engineers (and I) want as they head down this path of personal and professional development.
“I just want to get past this exam and move on.”
This was my sentiment – and the sentiment of most I work with.
At the very core of this pursuit, we just want to pass the FE Exam and move on.
Period.
Yes, there are people out there that really want to master the fundamentals in this moment, and that’s great.
But the reality of life is that time is limited, our responsibilities are ever-growing and our energy to add on something else is decreasing by the second.
So how can we increase our chances of passing?
Think outside the box.
We at Prepineer have spent over a decade developing a strategy that focuses all of our students, regardless of discipline background, on preparing for and taking the Other Disciplines exam.
Without a doubt, this approach can be a friction point for many, leading them to one of two responses (or both):
- They hadn’t a clue that this was even an option, and having not thought about it, common sense tells them they’d be better off sticking with the exam aligned with their background.
- They like the idea, but think that if they do pursue the Other Disciplines exam, that they wouldn’t be able to perform well in those subjects they have no background in.
It is true that their will likely be subjects that you haven’t seen, but the fact is this…
You have the ability to get “just dangerous enough” in any subject – and that’s all that is needed.
You’ve got to understand, the Other Disciplines exam is developed for a wide range of engineering backgrounds that fall outside the core six.
Because of this, the NCEES knows that they are not able to dive deep in to any one individual subject, so rather, they test on a broader range of subjects at a minimal proficiency level of depth.
On the flip side, if one was to choose their discipline specific exam, the NCEES can, and should, expect that engineer to be well-versed in all areas of the study.
I, still to this day, haven’t met a Civil engineer that is specialized, at depth, in transportation, geotechnical, structural, surveying and construction…
But, when you look at the NCEES specification, you are sure to see a heavy emphasis put on all these areas.
This outside the box approach has helped even the most challenged of students, those who had failed the exam 4, 5 even 6 times, prepare confidently for and pass the FE.
Just ask Ashley, or Bonnie, or Zach.
When, at the end of the day, all you want to do is get past this exam, thinking outside the box may well be your ticket to getting it done.
“Teach me like I know nothing.”
I limped through college living the motto “C’s for degrees”.
Average at best when it comes to what people would consider intelligent.
But that didn’t matter for me –
And it doesn’t matter for you.
You see, again –
We are here to pass an exam.
When I was studying, I continued to run into a major obstacle of trying to “figure it out” when the programs I was using was leaving me hanging –
A lot.
If you have put in any amount of time studying for the FE, then I know you have experienced the same…
You open up a review, get to a practice problem, read a question and then –
See the answer.
There is no detail in-between.
Just a solid jump from A to Z.
When our time and energy resources are capped, jumping around trying to fill in the gaps isn’t something we can afford to be doing.
Unfortunately, it’s at this point that most quit.
And I get it.
At Prepineer, we pride ourselves on our depth of detail.
We tailor every piece of material we create to ensuring that no matter where you are today, you won’t feel like you’re spinning your wheels getting to the understanding you need.
Fast – so there’s no wasted time.
Our process is as simple as it gets.
We build in the trenches alongside our students.
That’s it.
We have stayed true to being a “student-centric” program from the start – because we were once students ourselves –
Feeling the same pressures, hitting the same obstacles and having the same desires.
So whether you are reading a review, watching a video walkthrough or working a practice problem, every ounce of energy that goes in to creating that content is focused squarely on walking you from knowing nothing to being completely comfortable in that area of study.
Want to see just how far we go?
We lay it all out here.
“I need you to keep me going when I am ready to quit”
It should be evident by now –
Successfully preparing for and passing the FE Exam is more than just sitting down and opening up a book.
This isn’t your typical cram-by-night and get-it-done type of journey.
It’s not a sprint – this is a marathon.
Students are going to spend anywhere from 150 to 300 hours preparing for this exam.
Typically, in college, we may spend somewhere around 10.
At that scale, pushing through the obstacles we encounter is doable.
Amp those obstacles up 15 to 30-fold, slap them in to the context of having a full-time job, growing family and real-life obligations –
Pushing through becomes much more the obstacle in and of itself.
This isn’t written to scare anyone away from pursuing their goal of becoming a licensed engineer.
It’s more to set the expectations and give over a decade of experience of what works after being on both sides of the coin.
At Prepineer, we believe that personal coaching, mentoring and accountability aren’t just some good things to have in place –
They are must-haves.
And with that, we connect each of our students with a personal coach that is in line with their specific needs.
Want to see just a coach can do?
This page right here will make it clear.
And…that brings us back to this
You are here for a reason.
You need to pass the FE Exam.
This may be a personal goal, something you have always wanted to do.
Or it may be something that is being forced onto you.
You are being told that you need to pass before some date, or else…
It’s job security.
For most, though, whatever bucket you are in…
Pursuing and passing the FE Exam represents a path towards personal freedom and choice.
We all came out of college with a lot of raw energy and excitement, but are now finding ourselves overworked and under-appreciated.
You are no longer fulfilled with where you are or where you are headed in your career and you need something to bring you hope.
Something that can reignite the fire inside and open up a whole new set of opportunities for you moving forward.
I get it.
I was in your same shoes.
But what are we to do?
Our gut will tell us that the best way to achieve any of our goals in life, whether that is passing the FE Exam, or getting in shape, or running a marathon –
Is to just hunker down and get at it.
And I will be the first to admit, this is how I approached many of my goals up to and through college.
But I tried that – and so did most all of our students.
It’s just a different game post-academia.
