Alternative Item Type (AIT) FAQ
Are the new AIT FE Exam problems going to be more difficult?
In theory, no, the new AIT FE Exam problems will not be any harder than the traditional Multiple Choice single answer problems that we are accustomed to seeing on the FE exam.
Without any hard data to back our stance, but experience in creating the material to prepare for the FE Exam, we feel that they will actually be easier if we can just wrap our minds around how they will be presented and how we can efficiently execute on the concept at hand when asked to do so.
However, due to the fresh nature of such problems and the timed conditions in which we are asked to perform under, we mentally may be thrown off, making them out to be more difficult than they actually are.
In this case, the answer is maybe, but it’s not because of the material itself…it manifests from not being properly prepared.
Up to this point in our University studies, we may have come to lean on gaining direction on how to solve a certain Multiple Choice single answer problem using the answer options that we are given as a starting point and working our way backwards to get the correct solution.
Seeing that all the new AIT problem types (MULTIPLE CORRECT OPTIONS, DRAG & DROP, POINT & CLICK, and FILL IN THE BLANK) eliminate this possibility for us, as well as creates a situation where multiple inputs can lead to a correct answer, they may seem more difficult.
But through exposure and repetition, we feel that we are one hundred percent capable of ridding ourselves of any mental bombshells mid exam.
So…
Are the new AIT FE Exam problems more difficult than the traditional Multiple Choice problems?
It’s not necessarily that the AIT problem types will be more difficult, they will just be, well, different…and this fact alone is enough to throw us for a loop on exam day.
So No, Maybe, Yes…and No…I think that’s a good synopsis of what we are saying here. 🙂
Bottom line, repetition, repetition, and repetition.
Build a solid ability to switch between the various problem types and you are going to be golden.
And that’s that, you got this!
