FE Exam Success Story: From Drop Out to PE in Multiple States
I think it’s time to share with you an FE Exam Success Story.
Because it can be powerful to hear about others who were in a similar situation as you and found success.
It’s even more powerful when you realize they were in much worse situations to start, and still got it done.
So with that, I want to introduce you to Zach Shepard.

Zach’s FE Exam Success Story
Zach’s journey from dropping out of the Engineering industry to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states is a perfect example of the transformational power of FE Exam prep done right.
Zach always wanted to be an engineer, but after preparing for the FE Exam 5 times and failing, he lost all hope that it was possible for him.
But he had a family who was depending on him and a job that was sucking the life out of him – so he stepped back up to the plate for one last shot.
Here are four specific obstacles Zach faced throughout his FE Exam journey:
- He hadn’t been applying any of the material he was being tested on since college, and because of that, it felt like he forgot it all. He felt that even if he was able to relearn it all, it would take an inordinate amount of time and he would just forget it again on the exam.
- He wasn’t getting any younger and his responsibilities both at home and at work were ever-increasing. Zach had to juggle multiple daily responsibilities while getting in quality, efficient, and effective prep time.
- There was so much on the exam that he hadn’t a clue where to start. He knew he wanted to take the exam by a certain date, but how he should allocate his time properly to make sure he was making the progress necessary to get through it all was always unknown.
- After 5 failed attempts, and just as many humiliating moments in telling people he had failed, he felt that another attempt would just be another embarrassment and further validation that he wasn’t meant to be an engineer.
Do any of those sound familiar to you?
If yes, then you’re in the right place.
Zach, and students like him, put his trust in the hands of Prepineer in hopes that the 6th time taking this exam would bring a different result.

Zach’s story is very unique, in the sense that he dropped out of the industry completely because he was so discouraged having failed the FE Exam multiple times.
But he picked himself back up, dusted off his blue jeans and gave it one last go, this is some of what he has to say about his journey:
I was roughed up – I needed a lifeline, I got in to Prepineer and I didn’t look back.
I knew, no matter what I encountered, I had the team at Prepineer that I could rely on. Knowing and having that feeling, made all the difference.
It’s a long, tiring, very trying road…and on that journey, you are going to need people, Prepineer makes everything more attainable.
Look, I don’t know where you stand today in your career.
Maybe you are riddled with uncertainty of what the future holds.
Maybe you are on cruise control, with fingers crossed that some turn of events will reignite your passion for engineering.
Maybe your are borderline hanging on to hope that engineering is actually the direction you want to go.
This was where Zach was – multiple times – he was about as far gone as you can be after 5 failed attempts.
He didn’t give up though, he committed to taking small actions each day, leaning against the emotions that came with tackling the exam, and today, Zach is a licensed engineering in multiple states.
You can do the same and become the next FE Exam success story.
Just take “a” step, we are here to help.
